Domain Name Troubles

From time to time something may change with your domain name that causes your website to no longer be live.

Here are some of the common causes for your to experience a domain name trouble.

  1. Domain Name Expired
Often an organization does not remember who or when a domain name was created. As such, the current website person is not receiving the emails and notifications about renewing the domain name. When this happens, eventually the domain name bill does not get paid and the domain name stops working.  You will usually see a domain name expired message on the screen or maybe a type of place holder website from the domain name company. To figure out where your domain name is registered and to see when it expires, you can follow this tutorial: https://onlinesupporthelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360035007431-Where-is-my-domain-name-registered-

  2. NameServer Confusion
Sometimes your domain name might be registered with one company but controlled by another company. This means that if you update your A records with your domain name company to point your domain name to our server, the update will not work because the domain name is being controlled by another company. Nameservers are the records that allow another company to manage your domain name. In this scenario you either need to restore your domain name to the original name servers or you need to update the A record with the company who does control you name servers.  This tuturial show you some examples: https://onlinesupporthelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360035007431-Where-is-my-domain-name-registered-

  3. Requires a Phone Call
Sometimes you can have the A record setup properly and setup in the right place and the domain name is still not pointing to our servers. When this happens, unfortuantely it requires a phone call to your domain name company. Each domain name company has their own settings and if the domain name A record is actually directing you to our website, then you'll have to call your domain name company talk talk it out with them.

  4. Is it our fault?
If you have the A record setup properly and we have made a mistake on our end, you will see the below error screen:

The above nicely formatted 404 error page is the error page on our server. You will see this if you have done everything right on your end, but something is still not right on our end.

However, if you do not see the above error, then the problem is with your domain name.

When the problem is your domain name
Below is a very common error page that definitely indicates the problem is with your domain name.

The above error means that the browser is not getting any instructions from the domain name on what to do. A lot of people think the above error means something is wrong with the website hosting, but really that error is telling you "server IP address could not be found".  The browser does not know where to go. The browser is not getting instructions from the domain name.
